As a lover of art journals I often spend my time trawling through Instagram and Pinterest in the search of new and inspiring creators. My visual taste in art journals can be quite varied and flexible, I normally fall in love with someone’s work when I can sense the care and attention they have applied during the page’s creation. Because of this I began keeping a list of my favourite art journal creators and started making notes on what I admire about their work. I started this little exercise as a way to absorb new influences and to be more self-aware of what I’m creating and sharing. In this post I will share some of my favourites and my thoughts, with the intention that you will be able to see who inspires me and who can potentially inspire you.
@thecreativezebra
Salmah from @thecreativezebra has been a favourite of mine for a little while now! Her paintings are beautiful and I really enjoy her collages too. The way she photographs her art journal has me totally smitten, I honestly don’t think these would look out of place within a magazine, the bright backgrounds are really pleasing to my eye. I also really like her use of colour in general. There’s so much harmony across the spreads, it all works really nicely!
@thehandcraftedstory
These journal spreads belong to Anika from @thehandcraftedstory. I love her simple and clean graphics combined with empowering themes and attractive lettering! She is also a digital art journal creator, like myself, so seeing her work is even more inspiring to me. I adore her use of colour and how she uses it to create her striking spreads.
@vineandthistle
Alicia from @vineandthistle creates spreads with bright beautiful colours and bold marks. I love the aesthetic of her work so much, it makes my heart want to burst!! She's also really talented in creating contemporary lettering which works really well as a focal point for each spread. There's so much texture from all the layers of paint and mark-making, it really speaks to my abstract-loving soul!
@mereljournals
Merel from @mereljournals is a very well known and well loved member of the art journaling community, her creative spreads were some of the first I ever came across when I started my own art journal creative journey. Her spreads include her own beautiful paintings and illustrations, as well as her inspiring writing. Her use of composition is really out of this world in my opinion, a real treat for the eyes! I really love the more natural colour palette she uses, it feels so cosy and comforting. I also really enjoy her use of colour swatches, pressed flowers, and other ephemera, it makes the pages feel even more tactile.
@lostol0gy
Last but not least there is Parthivi from @Lostol0gy, her pages just ooze with magic and whimsy! I adore all the natural and celestial themes that tend to reoccur in her work, everything looks so beautiful and feels so special. I've noticed that her spreads tend to feature dark and contrasting colour themes, sometimes with a select accent colour. Combining these aesthetics creates pages which almost feel sacred!
So those are just some of my favourites right now, I have lots more too so if you would like to see more then just let me know! I hope you find their work just as inspiring as I do and give them a follow so you can stay up to date with their latest work.
Do you have some favourite art journal creators? I'd love to know who's you're enjoying right now!
